HAWTHORNE KICKS OFF SPRING RACING

HAWTHORNE OPENS WINTER-SPRING THOROUGHBRED MEET WITH FULL CARD OF EVENTS & PROMOTIONS LEADING UP TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY

CHICAGO (February 15, 2012)—Hawthorne Race Course, Chicago’s “hometown track,” will open its winter-spring thoroughbred meet on Friday, February 17th with a dynamic calendar of events, contests and daily features for veteran handicappers and new fans alike.  As legislation to allow slot machines at Illinois race tracks continues to develop in Springfield, the action atHawthorne will remain on the track and in its grandstands, including in the new finish line box seats and party boxes.

“Our spring meet really sets the tone for the year of Illinois horseracing,” said Tim Carey, president and general manager of Hawthorne Race Course.  “With increased purses we already have 40% more horses on-site than we did at this time last year.  We have more contests and more special events planned.  And we just built new box seats right at the finish line for private parties and player reservations that will feature food and drink service, private HDTVs and an up-close view of the action on the track.”

Fan-Friendly Fridays

Back by popular demand, every Friday at Hawthorne, beginning on opening day, February 17th will feature: $2 admission, $2 hot dogs and $2 draft beers.  On opening day the first 500 fans with paid admission after 10:30AM will receive a free multi-horse 50¢ Pick-4 wager valued at $4.

Saturday Buffets & Bloody Marys

Every Saturday during its spring meet,Hawthornewill host an all-you-can-eat $19.95 buffet in its historic Gold Cup Dining Room overlooking the finish line.  The buffet features a carving station, pasta, an omelet bar, soups, salads, various side dishes and dozens of fresh homemade desserts. Hawthorneis also introducing a “build-your-own” Bloody Mary bar for just $1.99.

On opening weekend, Hawthornewill also host a Mardi Gras Party in the Gold Cup Dining Room with special guest Svengooli and a buy-one, get-one sale on the buffet which opens at 1PM.

The Road to the Derby

Also beginning on Saturday, February 18th, Hawthorne is hosting a Road to the Derby handicapping contest focused on each week’s Kentucky Derby prep races.  With no purchase or wager necessary, fans will be invited to pick one horse in a designated race for a chance to win $100 in free wagers each week, as well as a VIP trip for 2 to the Kentucky Derby and a two-year lease on a new car.
